Servant Leadership VS Followership
The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast the ideas of servant leadership and followership. Servant leadership is a philosophy in which the main goal of the leader is to serve. Whereas, followership is the capacity and willingness to follow a leader. These ideas and philosophies have similarities and differences which we will discuss. Through the observation of these, we will improve our understanding of becoming a better leader or follower.
Servant leadership diverges from followership in several ways. Servant leadership is a philosophy wherein serving your followers is your form of leadership, rather than following your leaders. Therefore, one of the differences is authority; while a servant leader may serve their followers, they still hold a position above them. Secondly, servant leaders have different roles and responsibilities. A servant leader will serve their followers, but fill the role as the head of the mission that requires accomplishment. While a servant leader can assist their followers with tasks, they will at the heart of their task still be guiding soldiers with a purpose to complete a task.
Conversely, Followership differs from servant leadership as well. Followership, as stated above, is an intentional practice on the part of the subordinate to enhance the synergistic interchange between the follower and the leader. As such, followership varies from servant leadership in philosophy. Followership, opposed to servant leadership, embraces the follower role and focuses on completing tasks rather than organizing them. If the servant leader is the head of the mission, followership is the muscle. Followership comprehends information that the servant leader disseminates, and selflessly completes the mission’s tasks without dissent, or doubt.
However, servant leadership and followership also share common ground. Servant leadership enforces the goals of the mission through placing importance on the tasks that complete the mission, much like followership. Followership shares many attributes and competencies with leadership; presence, character, intellect, leads, develops, and achieves. Moreover, both leadership and followership must use these characteristics and skills to complete the mission, even despite the difference in scope. Followership also places emphasis on mission completion which goes hand in hand with servant leadership philosophy.
In summation, now know the similarities and differences of servant leadership and followership. Servant leadership is more focused on a larger scope, but places weight in the roots of the mission to ensure a healthy team, mission, and achievement. Followership places importance on the tasks that need completion to improve the overall health of the team and mission. In conclusion, leadership and followership are like relatives, working towards the same purpose with different roles.
